I dont know if I am alone in this or not but I am a huge pulp comic fan from Doc Savage to Dick Tracy and others. I want to kind of meld that feel of the old two fisted action stories and crime dramas with fantastic elements of old fantasy standbyes like Dwarves and Magic. To do this however I feel that the d20 Modern system needs quite the overhall. By the way I am dyslexic so I apologize for my poor grammar and spelling ahead of time.
Classes: While the strong hero and tough hero allows for genric starting points that can then be further defined. I think they are in a way to conventional for the kind of image that I have in my mind. Instead I am looking at classes from the core of the concept. I know I could rely on prestige classes but I prefer to start the feel of the setting when the hero first crawls into the world. Some examples..
*The hardboiled detective-A mix or fighter and rogue gifted with substantial fighting skills as well as eclectic mix of skills with a focus on deduction and information gathering. They also posess a bardic knowledge ability called street smarts which is from there education in the school of hard knocks. Inspiration: Dick Tracy, Sam Spade, John Hartigan,
*Occultist-Spell caster who progesses down unique spell lines based on the belief system they ascribe to. Quicksilvers (Alchemists) specilise in the inherent magic of materails while Spirit Tamers (Animism) can cajole and elicit favors from spirits to name a few. Inspiration: Doctor Death, Thulsa Doom,
*Noble Savage-Barbarians raised in the wild far from civilization. In an age of guns and magic they use only there hands and archaic weapons but to incredible effect. Survialists to the extreme even taken out of there native habitat they quickly adapt and change to any situation they are put into. Inspiration: Tarzan, Conan, Ka-Zar,
*Gadgeteer- Generations ahead of modern soceity a gadgeteer is capable of constructing mind boggling contraptions. At lower levels they may build ray guns and small helper robots but as they progress death rays and high tech headquarters are not beyound their reach. Inspiration: Herbert West, Doc Savage, Briliant, Doctor Who, The Time Traveler
Races: The challenge is taking established fantasy races and giving them a very pulp feel.
The world itself:
I am looking at a 1950's style world which is clearly not earth but has many similarities with the time frame. A great war has just ended and a new surge of technologically is changing how the future is viewed. The atom has been split and the race for advanced technologicaly and new age witchcraft is on to establish a soverign power.
Tell me what you think of this set-up and if anyone would be interested in aiding in the design phase or playtesting once true development has commenced.
