View Full Version : Learning 4th Edition

Well, I have decided to run a game for beginners to the 4th edition system. The only condition is that you own a copy of the Player's Guide. I would really like to show new people to the game but you gotta at least have that. It is essential. If you want to learn about the game you can just probably watch the game thread and learn a lot.

When you have enough MF let me know the forums you need and I will bang them up on the board as soon as possible.

Oops, I had posted in the other thread before I saw this one. I'm up for it :P

I might run with just a couple players and just add them. This won't really be an adventure per say just a series of rules events in and out of combat.

I just read through the phb and I have to say, im abit lost. I cant figure out the crit system on pg 217, 276, 278. I also got to say im not to happy with the new alignment setup. I liked being chaotic good. But hey I will join in and give it a try. Let me know when your going to start.

A crit just maximizes damage, instead of doubling, but you are most likely going to crit using an ability and be dealing more than normal damage.

Magic weapons also deal extra damage on a crit sometimes.

Good is the new Chaotic good. They just combined neutral and chaotic good. They were basically the same thing.

Evil is the new neutral and lawful evil. Chaotic evil is the real mean ones.

Neutral is now unaligned.

I like it.

But this is for a game request for players, not a place to get into the rules. Open a new forum for rules stuff if you want ;)

Beam me up, Scotty. . .er..sign me up that is. Thinking of trying out the rogue on this run, if you don't mind.

I'd be interested in joining. I still need to pick up the PHB, but if we have an estimated start time that'd be cool to know so that I know how long I have to get it.

I, of course, am very interested.

I don't care what people run, at all. I am most likely just going to create a few encounters that end up getting harder and harder with little or very cliche story. Something, I don't really have to spend time on as I am in the middle of planning for a 10-level+ adventure chain for my home campaign.

The books come out tomorrow at your local stores. They might sell out but WotC sent the books back to the printer already so there should be enough. LOL, I sound like a WotC salesman.

If you have the books, we can get the game rolling probably by Sunday night. Also, do not be a party pooper if I kill you because I am most apt to do so in a game like this. I will work up to show how effective party dynamics are and then I will kill you using team tactics with your enemies at your level (or at least I will try).

MindForge
6th June 2008, 05:40 PM
By the way, people can join up as they make characters and I will begin a rotation when people die. With a one day break between total party kills.

Since were mainly bashing on the rules, if their isn't someone else hopping into the fight, would we be able to whip up a new char?

Also, you had mentioned in another forum about creating the characters together since it's more of a group fighting in 4e. Are we going to be creating the characters in the chat or on our own?

MindForge
6th June 2008, 07:08 PM
I'll probably have a sub-forum to knock around the team building ideas.

So who has a character ready? We need 4 and then start up a line. I am going to run a gauntlet here - we will keep points...

Who is ready to die in the Gauntlet of the Mindforge?

MindForge
9th June 2008, 09:02 AM
Ok. Here is the deal on this game. It will be called "The Gauntlet of Mindforge". I have decided to take this one for a test drive. It will feature contain encounters only. There will be some roleplaying - but even these will be skill challenges within encounters.

This might be difficult to do but we will pilot it and perhaps when the game table comes up I will continue it there.

Ok. Here are character creation rules:

1. You must use method 1: the Array to create your character. All other characters will be denied. This is to make it easy on me.

2. Double check your math.

3. Every 2 encounters - you level up.

4. You will die. The idea is for me to kill you. This is my gauntlet. Do not get butt hurt if your blood spills. As I increase your level, the game gets harder.

5. Use teamwork as soon as possible. Each game will have a thread to talk in about your characters and to think of possible combinations to use against me. I will use monsters out of the book and templates out of the book. No special builds for me. But I promise you I will use creatures and tactics that work well together. I try and purposely combine creatures that will destroy your team.

6. If two of your team are dead at the end of a round - your game is over and you can join the waiting list. If there is no waiting list... make a new 1st level character.

7. There will be no exceptions. Also, no one can have a cat (we had a problem with this). Also, you will be wearing armor - you will not have to spend 6 minutes to put it on with assistance (we had an issue with this once too).

8. You must post your action as soon as possible, if not I will use an at-will power that I think it appropriate. When your turn starts you get 24 hours to post. Do not post in the game forum unless it is your turn. Post in the OOC forum.

Also, I'm writing up the character right now.

I'll throw together a character tomorrow.

Alright - who's going to do what? We're clearly going to need a good team, so I think it would be good if we discussed at the minimum who takes what class to start. Personally I'm leaning towards a Warlock right now, with Fighter being my second choice.

MindForge

Also, remember that it is first come first serve on the four slots for the game. If two die it is over, three can attempt to continue to see how far they can get.

Also, I wanted to let people know that the daily powers do not recharge until after a boss fight (every five encounters). So, encounter 5 is a boss fight. After that fight characters get their extended rest to go for 5 more. Characters do not get an extended rest between but may take a short rest between each encounter.

Alignment
(I don't believe in alignment....) Description of viewpoints: Is willing to accept wrong, as long as it does not harm him or his. In fact, he finds that sometimes corruption in others can make his life easier. Even so, once his loyalty and trust is truly gained (not always easy), it's quite solid. He will not betray those close to him without good cause. He views his companions as part of 'him or his' (above). He avoids giving his word on anything, since he prefers not to break promises once they're made. To those who have not earned his trust, he is rough and heartless, and will not hesitate to act against them if he feels it is best for himself. He loves to show off his strengths, but tries to keep a trick or two in reserve - make sure the enemy knows you have power, but avoid letting on just ho much. In the same vein, he likes to be in control. He's a manipulator and strategist. He doesn't like taking orders, especially without an explanation. Pick what you think fits this.

Languages Common, Draconic (Dragonborn were a major enemy once, so this would make sense)
Skills
Arcana +6
Bluff +9
Insight +6
Intimidate +7
Stealth (untrained) +4

Str 10 (+0) Dex 14 (+2) Wis 13 (+1)
Con 16 (+3) Int 13 (+1) Cha 14 (+2)

Equipment
Adventurer's Kit
extra waterskin
Flask (empty) x2
Climber's Kit
Chain (10 ft)
Leather Armor
Dagger
Torch x2
Rod (but he doesn't use it)
Sickle
extra pouches x3
8gp;6sp;14cp

ENDNOTE: First two party members are a Dragonborn and a Tiefling....interesting.

I did notice the health seemed a bit low. Thanks, Mindforge.

Raf -

check your hp, it is +Con not +Con modifier.
You fit unaligned to a T.

Ok. That is two slots filled. Two more left and keep going because who knows how long they will live.

Two more slots remain.

Here is some quick teaser text.

You are conscripted by a wealthy merchant – Baron Kraggen - to escort him into hostile territory in order to negotiate a trade treaty. Along the voyage, you discover this mission is more than just to set up trade relations – it is for him to give away trade and military secrets to the monstrous kingdoms of the northeast. He has turned traitor to the large diverse kingdom you all call home.

Upset, you and your friends try to commandeer the boat and are captured and thrown in a cell. The ship is assailed by a massive storm a few days after your imprisonment and the ship is forced onto a beach.

You are escorted onto the beach and learn that the man has left on foot to deliver the precious secrets of your home kingdom. If this information falls into the wrong hands you might see your people enslaved by the mighty armies of these inhuman creatures.

In the night, you manage to free yourselves and gather your belongings. After overhearing the crew speak of the merchant and his plans to deliver the plans to the dragon master of Magakora – you make your way swiftly into the trees following his trail as best you can.

There are two slots left for the first game. I want people to form a waiting list if we get more and we can see who can make it through this gauntlet of encounters.
