The Crystal Cavern
A mysterious place protected by dwarves
Lore
Knowledge (local) or (religion) checks may be used.
DC 15: The site is considered a Religious site by dwarves and tales of mysterious rituals take place here.
DC 20: Some of the items in the site are made of crystal or a type of gem, and are important to the dwarves. This site is blessed by the Gods of Good.
DC 25: One of the items in the room is told to be a gift of the Gods of Good and only the pure of heart are able to look upon this.
DC 35: The item that the dwarves received from the Gods, is a Scorpius Pearl, and contains great powers. It is said that it is invovled in secret dwarven rituals.
Description
In a large cavern, there are 7 pillars in a semi-circle, with an 8th pillar in the middle of this semi-circle. The pillars in the semi-circle would have 7 different types of Crystals or Gems. These Crystals and Gems have powers, in addition to being signifigant to the Dwarven Religion (such as Cure Spells and Remove Disease). On the 8th pillar is a pearl, called the Scorpius Pearl.
Prerequisite
Party will only be able to enter the site if their alignment is nonevil. The site is protected by a Protection agaist Evil spell and is a permanent spell. To activate or use the Scoripus Pearl, the "weilder" must be a Cleric or a Paladin of at least 9th level or higher.* The Pearl would not activate if the weilder is neither a cleric nor a paladin; although may affect nongood characters (see below)
Activation
The Gems or Crystals may cure the party if the particular Gem or Crystal is picked up and held. The Scorpius Pearl will only react to a Paladin or a Cleric. The Scorpius Pearl will "activate" once the Cleric or Paladin has an epiphany or meditate for 1 hour over the Scorpius Pearl, whichever comes first. Only after this is done, the wielder realizes that the Pearl is an intellegent item, and "tested" him or her.
Recharge
The Gems and Crystal cannot be recharged after 10 uses. After 10 uses, they become dull in appearance. The Scorpius is an Intellengent Item and does not need to be recharged.
Special Abilities
Scorpius Pearl:
Alignment:Lawful Good Ability Scores: Int 19, Wis 19, Cha 10
Languages:Common, Dwarven, Celestial, Elven, Undercommon
Communication: Speech, Telepathy
Senses: 120 ft Darkvision, blindsense, and hearing
Lesser Powers: Bless 3/day, Zone of Truth 3/day, 10 ranks in Sense Motive, and 10 ranks in Listen
Greater Powers: Detect Evil at will, Cause Fear at will, Clarvoyance 3/day
Special Purpose:Defend the servants and intrests of the Gods of Good.
Dedicated Power:Weilder receives +2 luck bonus on all attacks, saves, and checks.
Item Ego Score:25
Scorpius Pearl can read all languages, as well as use Read Magic. The item can use either communication mode at will, with language use as any speaking item. It can communicate telepathically with the wielder.
A nongood character which possesses or holds the Scorpius Pearl gains 1 negative level. This is not actual level loss, it remains as long as the character possesses the Scoripus Pearl and cannot be overcome in any way (including restoration spells).
Duration
Benefits of the Scorpius Pearl last as long as the weilder posesses it.
Aura: The area has an Aura of Good.
Ability Value: Cost of Scorpius Pearl: 142,900 GP (however, a Dwarven Cleric, or Paladin, may insist that it is priceless)
------------------
I used a variant of this in my Revenge of the Dragon campaign. You may be able to use this in any type of setting, the DM may be able to subsitute the common Dwarf race that I used with another subrace.
*=DM may choose an additonal prerequisite that the weilder must also be a Dwarf. DM may also expand classes to a Favored Soul or something similar.
