Well, my game starts later this month in my campaign world for 4th edition.

Okay, the game starts in a small town of a few hundred, called Sentinel's Shadow. It has been a century since the complete collapse of a world spanning empire. A collapse so sudden and powerful that it left the world in complete chaos (read my Element world description in the home campaign section for more).

The players are contacted by the leader of the town to help escort a caravan with the help of others to the north to Aegis, the largest known city since the collapse. There are stories of cities that were larger but they are - for the most part - stories.

The story starts off normal and cliche with the characters escorting a trade caravan. The voyage is relatively harmless and pretty much used to set the tone. Some goblins attack once the mountain passes start and they get worse and worse and near the peak the characters must make a decision to save a small town (more like an encampment) of miners from a goblin infestation or continue escorting the caravan. Both have consequences, I want to set that tone off the bat - there will be decisions to be made and they will impact everything the players do. Once the characters get to Aegis, they will be paid and told that they can return because they will not return to Sentinel's Shadow for some time. This gives the characters an opportunity to try and aid the mining town again.

Regardless, on the way back there will be a solar eclipse and during the eclipse the sky will begin changing; another cosmic event. The shards have returned a huge belt of elemental energy slowly moves across the sky and one of the moons is hit by the onslaught of shards. This causes an earthquake where the characters are and it also causes all kinds of other disasters. Parts of the moon begin falling from the sky but most of it remains intact with a huge broken half, parts of the moon become part of the belt too. The characters witness the entire cosmic event occur and the firework display of debris burning in the atmosphere.

Ok. So, the PC's meet some barbarians who announce that dark days are coming once again and this will only bring the greatest of evils up from the surface. This will be an age of ages blah, blah, blah. But in the end the characters will learn that the magic of the shards is returning. Now, people know what they can do and another Empire will be hard to forge this time with everyone scrambling for power.

The characters arrive back to town to learn that the earthquake has revealed a massive black door on the side of the mountain. (Adventure 2 - The Black Gate of Sentinel Peak)

In the second adventure the characters will witness the awakening of one creature that wants the power of the shards. Shards have not yet began to fall, but all the existing (but dead) shards on the planet have turned to dust. The druids in the area must be sought out to learn of what is happening and the characters will learn that the gate was created to seal evil in. The characters must go investigate (and hopefully unwittingly open the gate).
