This thread is a continuation of a discussion from Cragspire (http://barroks-tower.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3318), a magical location I came up with. Please feel free to join in the discussion over this, I'm sure MindForge and I would welcome any ideas tossed about here

I'll have a couple of ideas for low powered ones giving slight modifications to a character, I would like to make a burial site where if a person takes a body that has been prepared in a specific way they can speak with the dead but with a chance of possession attached to it.

This discussion thread has been moved to its new forum - Magical Locations. We can mull around a few ideas in this thread and start to get the fluff and stats hammered out in other individual ones.....

I hope this makes some semblance of sense.

Nice thread!

I suggest basing the modification on some factors such as relationship-related through family, loyalty oath, etc. or complete strangers- long dead and buried but still intact corpse to use as a foci. I thought that the ashes could be cared (much like a combination of a familiar/spell component/takes a magic slot) of a love one or a stranger of some re known. A special feat (even regional or racial) could be added to a character to allow this ability or even a whole class could be designed (even though there are a few already in existence) around this concept.

Some examples to gain benefit from such powers over the dead can be reflected in a contest of wills perhaps, have a DC rating based on Cha or anything really to overcome the ego if you will of the spirit in question. Now factor in the relationship if any, to modify the results.

Success could generate many different bonuses. If you have a copy of the Tome of Magic handy (the 3.5 edition), some examples of this can be seen within the leveling structure of the Binder, one whom binds spirits (Remnants of consciousness really) to performs tasks and grant limited but useful powers and abilities. other bonus powers could be extra metamagic levels to pay for current feats that require extra level slots to use or the ability to speak with the dead, remain hidden from the undead, etc.

Failure means possession - acting in ways perhaps that do not reflect well of the one possessed. Sometimes this could lead to more trouble down the road because the spirit wishes to fulfill desires that were not achieved in life. Other drawbacks could be that animals avoid the possessed or even a whole town of superstitious residents decided to run you out of town.

The Tome of Magic did raise a few differing aspects of how to use magic, the binder did have a lot of flavour to it.. though I would have to introduce different powers for them to use instead of the ones supplied - I did like Karsus though.

The idea of of Locations being keyed to something is definitely a concept I want to explore over the next couple of days. I think I may start out with one being Item specific and see what comes after that. I have an idea for a basic artefact that has no real powers to speak of except being the trigger for the magical location. Thus the players have to journey to find the Key Item and then to the Magical Location - this you could write a game around.. possibly trying to stop a villain from getting to the location or stealing the key off them..

I would then go onto where you have to perform a certain ritual at other locations - maybe have to find a ritual in a specific book - thus having to quest for the book, the components.. then to actually get to the location.

I was wondering if any of the magical locations listed were used in any campaigns.

I have a few I'm planning on for one of my current campaigns (I hesitate to post it here just yet..). ;)

(Back to work for me on some Divine areas :D)

I tend to use circles of standing stones in my collections of magical locations. Monoliths. . .the old glowing pool of light. . .etc. . .

I've also been known to make locations usable for a very limited amount of time per year. A natural recharge using ley lines is the most common. Note that ley lines are fluid, similar to rivers, and their actual locations may travel quite a bit from year to year. . .

At one point I had a random generator that I built using Basic. It got used more than it should have, most likely :)

I have used locations in my games several times in each campaign... even before DMG2. DMG2 changed it all though - and I started utilizing the new versions in that for m locations with a little house rulings...
