I'm been playing D&D for some years, mostly 3/3.5e, and a little 2e. I've played in several setting and like experimenting with different personality archetypes. I've recently been transfered with work and no longer have a gaming group so I'm turning to the digital arena for my fix.

I'm currently playing in a maptools ran campaign which I must say, I'm very impressed with. Having used grids and minitures most of the time, I find a visual rep. helps organize people. There is something to be said for not using it too, as some say a representation impedes imagination. So far that hasn't been the case, as I could imagine it quite clearly as my Dwarf and party cleric flying down a mine in a cart into a formation of hobgoblins. There is some setup involved with maptools, the objects make it very easy though, probably as good a 2d version of wizards new D&D insider is going to be, but free. The only real problem is coordinating time zones and meetups... I assume that's why you use PBP, I'll probably lurk around a bit to see how it works but I can't currently understand how it can not take forever to accomplish anything without live interaction.

So that's my shpeel, any questions or suggestions are more than welcome.

Well, first of all, welcome to the site! Browse around; take a look at some of the games and some of the resources (Barrok is a master resource maker-upper!). You might find that PBP is often roleplaying with an emphasis on ROLEplaying. Yes, there is action and combat, but also, many folks go to great lengths to create a unique and deep character with plenty of background and motivation. Then, they attempt to play that role as truly as possible.

You have a good point. Sometimes the lack of visuals might seem to slow things up a bit or muddy the clarity of some situations. Many PBP'ers are only able to post once a day (sometimes less frequently) so it is definitely asynchronous. It has it's pros and cons.

Like I said, stay awhile, have a look around, maybe even jump in a game to see what it's all about. If you have any questions, give a holler. Something is bound to hear you and come crawling up from the depths.
