The city amazes you, its alabaster walls reaching high into the sky, the grassy plains surrounding it, the wheat blowing in unison with the wind. The sky blue, with pastry like clouds accenting it. As you are ushered through the center gate, you see the glories that spirituality can build, even if some are not your glories. Temples dedicated to Races God reach almost as high as the walls, schools built from marble, the religious dialogue on the steps of the buildings, arguing and laughing.
When you get to the city square, you see the statue of the first priests of each race, each holding a tool, symboling their dedication to the good that the city was founded on. Let the outsiders have their philosophy you think to yourself, faith will break through all theories. As you move through the square, you see the marketplace has just opened for business today, the merchants calling their wares out to interested persons a like. The Dutiful, the cities elite guards are also on the look out for any scheming or wrong doing, their maces and morning stars strapped to their hips. To the right of the square you notice several large iron pillars, not a speck of rust on them, and figure they must be the Wizard's Keep, where the most potent magic is researched.
Just past the square, towards your final destination, is the HUB, which is where many of the goods are produced and stored. You see smithy's hammering away and fletcher's slowly applying their trade. Silk shops hang beautiful fabric to dry, and bakers and meat cutters craft the most delicious looking morsels.
At last you reach the City Hall, where you see each Deity represented on a golden emblem. There are two ebony doors, with silver handles, which are being held open by two dwarves in the garb of guardsmen. They nod as you all walk in. You all think to yourself why you were called here, and why so urgently that you had to leave in the middle of the night...

DM Note: I would like you to introduce yourselves first before I get going, but I wanted to give you a general idea of the city.

CountFalchiezVander
1st February 2008, 06:33 PM
You are all ushered into the main audience chamber of the Hall, and before you you see the highest orders of priests for each of your faiths, each at a table that holds scriptures, a glass and a jug of water. They look at you and bow their heads. At the far end of the room sits a colossal being, it looks neither like elf, dwarf, gnome or halfling, and definitely looks nothing like an orc or kobold. The giant humanoid stands and speaks, his voice echoing in the room loudly.

"Greetings, I am Faroth, Governor of the City, Keeper of the Laws. You have been summoned to investigate a rather interesting discovery. One week ago, the mining town of Meresh, while delving for copper, found the ruins of what appears to be an ancient town or city. Many of the scholars have since tried to determine its origin and whom it belongs to, but to no avail, everything has been ransacked from the buildings; at least as far as we dared travel. There is also evidence of an ancient religion that might have taken root there, and it is our intention to discover what it was, how it worked, and whether it should be stored in the archives or dessimated from history. We know not how long this endeavor will take, but there is a fee of 10,000 gold pieces awarded to you should you succeed, 4,000 to you, and the remaining to your Church of practice, wherever it is. For those of you that accept, there is also a gift, something specific that each high priest has decided to bestow upon you in order to aid your quest. What say you?"

He folds his arms and awaits a response.

Faroth looks to the group.

"The mining town is about a weeks ride from here, up in the mountains of Byssia. The road is traveled heavily, but there are... skirmishes every now and then. "Well I don't have a mount but I would drink some ale or mead."

CountFalchiezVander
3rd February 2008, 12:07 PM
As you take off for the inn, you notice that there is quite some excited chatter in the marketplace, the people looking at you and smiling, waving, a few cheers every now and then. The assorted races almost give you a mass commoners blessing as you head towards the inn.
The Inn of the Flaming Dart is easy to spot, some magic has been worked to show a dart in the sign on fire. As you enter, you see a rather large common room, where various elves, dwarves, gnomes and orcs are all drinking and chatting about current events, and there are haflings, kobolds and others playing dice in a side room, almost as large. The tables seem to be made of marble, and the chairs oak. Behind the bar stands an elven woman, blond hair, green eyes, very trim, and a rapier is strapped to her hip. To her right, at the admissions desk, is seated a rather robust looking dwarf, his beard a fiery red and a small axe propped off to the side. He wears the cloths of a business man, and his hair is neatly tied back as he reads over some papers, occasionally signing them. He looks up when the room goes silent as you all enter, he nods, then goes back to the papers. The music strikes up from a corner near the central hearth, and an orcish woman begins to sing, her voice deep, but soft and rather soothing. The conversations again pick up.

I come to the table just in time to hear Pinvadd order a drink for himself. "Aye that sounds good, drinks all around and a good hearty meal for us all as we have a long journey ahead," I say. At the mention of food, Vivex perks up his ears as he has ventured back downstairs and has curled up under the table.

The merchants come from the front, most covered in blood, but not wounded. They raise a cheer as they see you all still intact, and distribute some blue potions, enough to heal anyone of their injuries. Belthic sighs after he finishes one of the potions.

"Well now, I wasn't expecting that to happen. The gnolls are getting rather brazen. Perhaps after this little mission we can make a side trip on the way back to the city to find out what is on the go with them.."

You all finish checking the other members out for injuries and healing what wounds were inflicted before carrying on. The rest of the journey goes by without incident, though there is a feeling of unease as you near the town.
Finally, you reach your destination: Meresh. It seems like the town jumped right out of a bard's story. A quiet central road with buildings on either side, the occasional resident walking silently from one side to another. There is a chill in the air, coming from the mountain top most likely. You can spot a large smithy at the far end of the town, with a steeple and the symbol of Moradin upon it. Belthic smiles a moment.

"It is midday, everyone is eating, let us go to the temple and make ourselves known. They may have some more information for us by now."

The dwarf heads along the road, nodding to people as he passes, and those people in turn look to you all with awe and fear, some a little disdain...

Looking around at the city, I think to myself, no wonder they need help.... People passing by staring at us all makes me a little uncomfortable. CountFalchiezVander

You all head to the temple, and Belthic leads the way, so as to give an explanation to the high priest about the assorted group he has come with.

The temple is simple, and yet complex at the same time. The doors are made from wrought iron, with pictures of dwarves forging picks and axes, and behind that it seems that there is a thin layer of crystal which, when catching the light of the sun, gives the illusion that the dwarves eyes are sparkle with the colors of the rainbow. The smoke stack has atop it a steeple like montage, which could also serve as a lookout. The foundry to the right of the temple portion is loud with the sound of hammers and metal being forged, and if one were to look through the open windows, a plethora of weapons, enough for an army , can be seen neatly arranged along the walls, easily accessible.
As the doors open, you can see an elderly dwarf, whose beard is the purest white you have ever seen, standing over a forge, his tunic matted to him from sweat. He seems to be doing something to something, though from this vantage point it is impossible to tell. He doesn't seem to be aware of your appearance as he continues his work, every now and then wiping his hands on his tunic. From the front you can tell this man is no slouch when it comes to battle, he is broad and solid looking, the occasional muscle rippling beneath his clothes as he makes certain movements.
Belthic calls out.

"Fillias, I have returned, and I have the Councils' blessing here with me."

The old dwarf stops, then looks upwards, his eyes flashing in the fire of the small forge. He raises an axe in greeting.

"Hail Belthic, and hail to you....."

The priest looks them all over, then breathes deeply and walks over to you all.

"Well, this was not exactly what I had in mind, but if the council chose you, then welcome to Meresh, and hopefully you can aid us in this rather difficult plight we have...."

shawnrc
14th April 2008, 05:13 PM
Looking at the 'older' dwarf I wonder to myself... by the looks of him I am sure he has seen much battle, I wonder how many of my 'kin' he has slayed? Stepping foward I say... CountFalchiezVander
16th April 2008, 05:46 PM
The dwarf sighs and folds his arms across his chest.

"It all began about a month ago. The mining operation broke through a wall of granite in search of some diamonds or other precious gems, and found what appeared to be a road..... They followed it down for a mile or so, steeping upwards until they reached a plateau. From there they looked down and saw what appeared to be a city, or town or something, made entirely from obsidian. When the report was made to the foreman, he told Dreflin, and a group of explorers went down to investigate. Twenty went in, fully armed and with magical support, but only one made it out, an elf named Vex, he's now the town's drunkard, but we give him leeway cause he don't cause trouble, and whatever frightened him did one heck of a job..."

The cleric turns his back and continues.

" Now the mining operation is on a skeleton crew since the workers are frightened that whatever lay in that place will come out, and we are slowly losing resources without the income. If you can, we want you to go down there and find out what it is that killed our men, and bring back its corpse. The next shift down is tomorrow morning, so you have the rest of the day to prepare. Moradin shine his forge fire upon you all..."

He bows then returns to the forge, continuing his work.

Belthic looks to the group.

"I have some things to attend to, so please feel free to rest at the inn or check the shops. The town could honestly do with a bit of outside business."

He bows and wanders into the back of the temple.

You all head down to the Hands Locked tavern, and it seems like the name is appropriate. When you enter the place, you see in the center of the large room a wooden ring, complete with ropes and turnbuckles. It stands about two feet from the ground, and at the moment is unoccupied. There are chairs and tables surrounding it, about four to five feet away from the ring itself, seemingly as a safety precaution, as you notice the tables are bolted to the floor. There are few patrons, and the ones that are there are quiet, drinking somberly during the mid day. You see behind the counter a rather bulky dwarf shining several steel mugs. The monk pulls an elongated tooth from his mouth and cleans the blood off it, then hands it to Gummsh. He then turns and walks towards the barkeep and gets a bowl of rice....

A few moments later a disheveled looking elf staggers into the bar from what appears to be the basement, his eyes blood shot and his hair mangled. "From the entrance of the mine to the most recent excavation is about a mile, nothing spectacular there. There are dangers on that road down to the city, so be watchful, for they will no be kind to you... You all arrive at the mining entrance at the appointed time. Belthic is waiting for you with some torches and a solemn expression on his face.

"It seems that the elf could not even help us in death I am afraid. But we must press on none the less. I have seen the others yet, but they will have to catch up. One of the town's children went missing last night, and the tracks indicate something dragged him in here...."

Belthic takes a moment to pray, then heads on into the darkness..

OOC: No idea as to the thanks button.

As you head down the long dark tunnel, Belthic begins to speak.

"IT seems that the miners are all keeping their distance from their "discovery". We have a few hours travel, and hopefully it will be quiet, but since they shut down operations, things have been reported popping in and out of the shadows."

The trail is rocky, the silence broken by only the occasional rock falling along the walls. After about an hour and a half, you all hear a strange trickling noise, almost like water trickling down the wall. Belthic stops and holds a hand up.

"There is no water in here, never has been...."

29th May 2008, 01:33 PM
Staying ever alert to the sounds around him, Gummsh doesn't think much of the running water until Belthic tells him that there is no water source . Suddenly Gummsh whips his spear into motion standing ready to thrust it through somethings heart. "No water? We better check this out."

Belthic moves towards the shadow, and holds up his torch. What is illuminated can only be described as horrific. A small boy is crucified unto the wall itself, rock shards holding him in place by the wrists. The trickling is that of blood coming from a small incision in his right leg, not near an artery, but close enough that he would bleed out before it healed....

Belthic curses and stares a moment, as if trying to figure out whether he should take the boy down or deal with the blood flow first...

The blood flows stops, and you hear a murmur from the child as he begins to breath a little more deeply.

CountFalchiezVander
2nd June 2008, 04:27 PM
As you remove the rocks and help the boy down, he simply shivers from the blood loss and does not speak. Belthic throws a blanket from his backpack over him and thinks a moment. You all hear from the ceiling a clicking noise, almost as if the rocks were speaking. Looking up you see something that looks like a deformed halfling, with tentacle arms and black eyes. five feet away is another one, and they stare down, and strike.

What you see before you widens your eyes.

The road widens to accommodate carts as well as travelers, and the buildings still stand in pristine condition, the rock and wood looking as if it had never been touched by a single element. You can tell that this might be the market section, by the way the road leads into a rather open area where there are many wagons lying around. There is no sound, no smell, not a single thing out of place, save for that there is no one there... It is as if in a single moment, every being was plucked into nothingness from their routine. There is no debris, no signs of a battle. Nothing... Overhead is the mountain top, the stone icicles hanging silently, watching...

What you see before you is not what you saw a moment ago. You are indeed in a market square, and there is horror all around you. Hearing them whisper something about spells he whispers as loud as he can without projecting his voice too much, "I am sorry I am late, Belthic is always in quite a hurry. So what we looking at?" Walking into the building in this order: Dariat, Pinvadd, Thibbledorf and Belthic.

As you enter the husk of a building, you can see that this was indeed a library, but not just any library, this was a temple to Boccob, from your studies you know him as the God of knowledge, one of the few deities that was allowed minor access to Althalous. However, this place has seen better days. Many of the shelves are overturned, the books scattered about, torn and moldy. Tables are cracked and chairs are thrown about. The only thing intact seems to be the central counter where one would ask for assistance from the librarians or priests, as the case may be. You look up and see this goes on for several floors, and there are several doors you can see once your vision adjusts, one right on ahead of you, two on the left and another on the right. Stairs are on either side of the circulation desk.
