The streets are deserted. Plumes of smoke can easily be seen but the worst of the fires seem to have been extinguished. With the low clouds that have blown in, the world seems all in shadows and shades of gray.

Lucien walks with his naked blade out and in the ready. He looks to Jeffs and say, "It doesn't hurt to be prepared, eh?"
He, like the others, keeps to the shadows as they walk. As they go, he keeps himself aware of the surroundings and the sounds and sights as they travel.

Jeffs nods, but doesn't say much. He appears slightly different... nothing you can put your finger on, but something's different. Maybe it's just how he appears in the odd, shadowy light. He keeps to the shadows as well, keeping near the front. He keeps his short sword in its sheath, but is ready to draw it at a moment's notice.

Everything seems oppressive, as if the city itself has surrendered part of itself already and awaited a terrible punishment.
Sounds have taken on a strange, echoing quality, only making thing seem more dangerous as footsteps echo down the alley ways.

A cold wind whips through the back alleys as the brave Ghosts work their way towards the docks. Except for the occasional swirl of dust and smoke or splash of blood on the cobblestones, the city is a like a tomb.
A detour around a shattered building brings the Ghosts to their first major problem, a canal, the bridges over which seem to be guarded by Dominion patrols. The nearest and largest bridge has a full six man patrol on it with simple wooden barriers (think saw horses) across each end.

Sova's knowledge is not up to date, but is there a place we can
cross the water 'on foot' not using the usual bridges?
Maybe a rope from building to building. Is there a smaller
bridge that is farther away? Sova
Knight of Roses

OOC: The canal here is about 8m/25' wide and there are bridges every few blocks. The current is not swift, so it could be easily swum and their are a variety of boats and barges.
However, there is not much cover in a canal, so crossing without being seen might prove to be difficult.

"We should check to see if the barriers are all set up along the way. Also keep your eyes open for a darkened area where we might cross on a boat? If that does not work, mabye we can fake ourselves across." Continue down looking for another less guarded crossing. Sova
The Speaker in Dreams
30th December 2007, 05:54 PM
"The only way we'll fake our way across is in uniform of the Dominion troops," responds Lucien in an absent manner as if the notion already crossed his mind. His eyes, however, are already scanning in the opposite direction of the manned bridges to see if there is a bridge that looks less defensible/armed, or a good patch of darkness under the bridge where they might hide themselves from detection above.
"I think our best chance might be to go under the bridge itself ..." he trails off, and then suddenly his eyes go wide at an idea, "Literally! We might be able to use whatever underpinings of the bridge protrude to secure ropes to it and climb across the underbelly of the bridge. With luck, no one will be the wiser for our passing."
Onya
30th December 2007, 06:05 PM
With admiration for the Giant Onya says in a voice that reflects her feelings saying,” I like your plan Sova. If we need to fake our way across I have a thought. I could say I was sent here to purchase some servants and as you can see Mighty warriors I have purchased some adequate ones and so I would to get back to my home. Then I would ask permission to pass. What say you gents? Want to be my servants for a bit?”

OOC- 500m on the left is a foot bridge, just large enough for two people to pass each other. Each end has been sealed off with ropes tied with bright red and orange paper.
Between the bridge you are at and the foot bridge are three small boats on your side of the canal.
750m on the right is a larger bridge, large enough for a wagon to cross on, it also is guarded by a six-soldier patrol.
Between the bridge you are at and the wagon bridge are two small boats, a large boat and a narrow barge on your side of the canal.

Onya moves close to Sova. She says ever so sweetly, “I like your plan a lot better than mine Capt’n. After all you do look like a sailor and a mighty fine too.” Her voice lowers and her tone has a concern about as she continues, “It is always good that a leader knows what the troops are thinking or feeling, Sir, so I must confess that I am a little scardy cat right about now. I won’t let my fears get to me though especially since I am in the good hands of a capable leader and among the ranks of brave men. So what do you think Ghost Leader? Shall we borrow a boat?”

Jeffs speaks up. "If you want a distraction, I can provide one... I doubt I could distract everybody at once, though. Under the bridge seems promising; the problem would be how to get down to the bridge unseen. Either way, I should be able to distract the patrols enough for you to make it across." He pulls his hat down a bit on his head and peers at the patrols.
The Speaker in Dreams
5th January 2008, 02:02 PM
"Well, then how are you going to get across?" Lucien responds quickly with a look of amusement. "Talk the guards out of their armor or some such? Ha! I jest, but if anyone works to distract, then that person is not likely to continue on with the rest of us."
He thinks a moment then adds, "Hells ... even if you manage a distraction, what's to keep the guards from detaining you for questioning? You'll be out numbered and alone - not a good position to negotiate from."
"You're right about the 'getting there' part of this, though. We do need to slip down or at least across the road here without being noticed ... sounds like we bide our time until nightfall in either case, though I do wonder what your 'act' was going to be as a sailor, Sova?" At that he turns to the large lizardlike being and awaits a response with a genuine curiosity expressed on his features. "I'd think sailors would be under the same scrutiny as everyone else in the city. Especially if they've delcared a curfew as one of the first actions."

Jeffs smiles. "Don't worry about me. I'm a big boy, I can take care of myself. Besides, I'll take my chances with approaching them rather than waiting to be discovered. I'd say that's a much harder position to negotiate out of." He keeps gazing at the patrols, apparently studying them for something. "We may want to move just before dark, because if they change watches we don't have as much of a chance to make it across."

The Enchantress meanders over to Jeffs. Standing in front of him she looks into his eyes and says with concern while touching his free hand with her own, “I know you are very capable of taking care of yourself big boy but I don’t like the idea of you going on the bridge alone.” Onya’s voice changes to a soft purr,” Perhaps I could go with you and help distract the guards by charming them with womanly wiles. Please my Brave one.”

Jeffs pulls back slightly at her touch. "No thanks, I doubt it'd work. Six of them, one woman? Trust me, it's better you go with the others. Besides, we wouldn't want you damaged." He turns back to the bridge, apparently dismissing her. He seems much more brusque than he has so far.

Her hypnotic amber eyes are filled with understanding as she speaks with a compassionate concern in her soft voice saying, “You are a very brave man, Jeffs.” With that said the little sorceress turns a and walks slowly back to Sova making a mental note to apologize to Jeffs for her boldness once they get out of this pickle barrel.

"Hrmph," is all the sound that Lucien makes as the exchanges take place. His smile is ever present, though at this moment it seems to be of a darker, more sinister sort when he adds, "Well, we'd all best keep our weapons loose in their sheaths is all I'll say for the matter."
He looks to Jeffs, "Especially you." After a moment he adds with a glib off-handedness, "Or some swift foot gear." He winks and pats Jeffs on the shoulder then sets to attempting to search the parties of guards as best he can from where he is without giving away his position. He also looks to undersupports of the small bridge to see how difficult tieing the rope would be underneath the thing.

As the group begins to get ready, Jeffs nods. "Go, I'm ready to make my distraction." He walks quickly back into the city, immediately turning and disappearing from sight. A few moments later, he jogs out of the city towards the bridge, taking a slightly wide angle towards the bridge. He appears to be dressed differently, although in the fading light it's hard to tell, especially since the group is focused on getting across the bridge. As he approaches the bridge, he slows, waiting to be challenged.

"Indeed, they haven't put up much of a fight. Not that I'm complaining... All I've seen if a few pockets of resistance, but of course they can't last more than a few minutes. The rest of the patrols seem to have more trouble enforcing the curfew than with any kind of enemy action." Jeffs strides slowly closer to the bridge, then glances back over his shoulder in the opposite direction of the footbridge. "Matter of fact, I just passed one patrol who were corralling a couple of drunkards. Small wonder they've put up little fight."

Lucien looks at her with a sideways glance and says in a low voice, "Nothing to get off the chest, m'lady. Just expressing a distaste for our options overall. At least we can go under the bridge ... and go for a swim if all else fails." The last of his comment rises in a devilish grin that works its way onto his face and into his voice. It is clear that no matter the occasion Lucien seems to always find some grim humor in nearly any encounter ... even if it is the thought of his own death.
"As for the eyes ... four are better than two." With that, he keeps his position near her and continues to watch the progress of the others. She can notice that his hands are resting on the hilts of his weapons.

One by one, living up to Onya's nickname, they slip across until it comes to Alain's turn. Even with his skill and strength, crossing in heavy armor is no easy task.
About a third of the way across, one of the supports snaps with a sharp crack. Only Alain's quick reflexes and the rope keep him from plunging into the canal. But it leaves him dangling under the bridge.
Only Onya (beside Alain) has yet to cross at this point.

The Speaker in Dreams
26th January 2008, 02:17 AM
Lucien looks to Sova after hearing the voice upon the winds ..."Help!" is what he hears, but he recognizes the voice instantly.
He turns to see what could cause the problem, and spies Alain, clad in armor, dangling like some heavy counterweight to a fishing line poised for casting. Of course, should he fall, the only thing they are likely to catch this day will be a batallion of Dominion troops.
"Damn," he mutters as he recognizes the dangerous position they have suddenly found themselves in. He looks to Sova and says, "Shimmy down the lines and see if you can help him. Tobias and I will perpare a little diversion on our end if we can buy you some time to get into more stable position, or run behind them to flank them. Maybe we can make it a quick fight before too many notice or reinforcements arrive. But go quickly! Combat will be our final option." As he completes the statement, he taps Tobias on the shoulder and indicates that the two should move up and around the bridge to make use of the cover it provides and wait there.
"Ready your bow, my good man, you may well have use for it soon," he whispers to his companion as they ready themselves for what is yet to come.
OOC: I'm figuring that Lucien will take the lead and be highest up the slope of the canal near the bridge supports (close to the top?). Tobias needs to stay a bit lower to keep the underside of the bridge and the others in sight and signal to me whether a diversion is needed or not. Lucien's going as high as he can without giving away anything strange, but in such a way that he can quickly scramble up the side and work some sort of diversion.[/b]

The patrol reacts like a well ordered machine: the halberdiers fall back while the crossbowmen form a triangle facing outward. Reacting to the glamoured cries of help, one of the halberdiers moves cautiously along the canal, covered by two of the crossbowmen.
Tobias sorts through his things, looking for something to help.

"Oh, sure! Why not just march right on up to them and try to bull our way past, eh?" He looks to each member of the group with a sort of wild look to his eyes, "I can see it now, we march in, make demands - they don't buy it, and we're neck-deep in blades and bolts, eh? Ha! Of course, it may be crazy enough to work. Either way I guess I'm more likely to meet my fate the way I always expected ... with a blade in my hand. If not here, then where ever we manage to get to on that ship."
As he speaks, his mood shifts from a sort of sardonic mania into a more reasoned and calculated mindset - as if he's moving the pieces in some mental game of chess trying to look 3-4 moves ahead of the current one.
At this, he flips a coin from his pouch with expert agility towards Sova and says, "Well, ante up then Captain. I'm in," he flashes his roguish grin and puts his hands on his hips for emphasis as he turns to say, "So ... what's my ruse? I'm you on the papers? You're .... what? New hires for the captain to inspect? A pleasure slave brought along for the journey?" The last bit he directs towards Onya with a cheshire cat's grin. "We'd best formulate our plan and story now so that we'll not contradict each other if questioned." He makes an even larger, full smile that is almost contagious, "Of course should all go well I won't give the guards a chance to question the lot of you."

Dragging his gaze away from the beautiful woman at his side, Lucien feigns disinterest to the situation, "What was that now ... all that barking of orders and such. So unnecessary I say - merely threaten to cut their employment," he gives a slight shrug to both Sova and Onya. "If they can't pay for the bread they need, they'll soon enough get the idea, eh, precious?" With the last comment he faces Onya and runs his finger from the small of her neck to up and along the jawline to the tip of her lips and sort of puckers his own face while drawing in close to hers. The voice he used for it was a sort of playful, intentionally high-pitched voice that one might use on babies or pets.
To the guards, he sort of just extends his hand out in a show of slight nuisance, wriggling his fingers in a sort of dismissive way. He turns his gaze as if hesitant to leave her face, from Onya to the guard with the crossbow. In his disarming manner he still maintains his foppish demeanor, "Yes, well ... I am the merchant, as the large fellow says. He's given you the papers, what more do you need? I'm rather anxious to get to our ship for ..." he intentionally pauses here to draw Onya closer to him by placing a hand at her waist and his other arm on her shoulder, finger tips only as if tantalizing himself for what is yet to come. Then he continues, "... some down time if you catch my meaning?"

He kisses her hand gently and then motions for Sova, Jeffs, and the others to gather around. Onya he keeps within hearing distance, but excludes her for show as it wouldn't be fit for the merchant to include his "pet" in serious talk.
When near enough to speak and not appear too out of character, he speaks, "Well, gentlemen, if this is our new plan, I fear words may not be enough to get us our of port. Any invading army, with standing orders to trade ships is very likely to see one of those ships going against orders as a 'military threat' I'd wager. That being the case, we'll have to make sure the certain arrangements are laid out for us. My guise provides just the type of non-threatening persona to wander about and make deals with the less-than-righteous element of the dock-watchers. I'll need all the money we can manage - so that I don't run out. Whatever money-pouches you have will be needed as well. I plan to have certain particular sums ready for a constant upping of bribes should they be needed. We'll need to bribe at least 3 people I can figure - the nearest watch group - so they let us move without hindrance, the harbor exit monitoring group, and the interim dockmaster. I'll start with the dockmaster as he is likely to have the most pull even with the others, and, if I play it right, we may be able to get the dockmaster to take care of all arrangments. He *may* also tap out all of our funds, depending on his greed and the direct personal threat for disobeying orders."
He looks to them for a response, but otherwise he waits to see what they can manage to gather for funds, or add to his observations.

Lucien looks for a comfortable place to sit/lay and then assumes that posture himself while clearly lifting his feet up and says, "As for the sour look of our friends ... well, I'm sure you did nothing wrong at all. It's more likely that I was too well immersed in my role as a silly merchant for their tastes." He sends a wink her way, "of course, maybe they were just jealous. Either way, no sense worrying about it until morning, so I'm fixing to rest up while I can. I'm not too sure of the crew just yet sine Sova is still running with our ruse.
