The morning mists dance in the sunlight at the gates to Dennish, the wind playing the part as partner to the wisps and their traditional movements. There is quiet throughout the village, as the adventurer’s make ready, sheathing weapons, checking their mounts and saying good bye to friends. Not even the sounds of the smiths can be heard.
The people have gathered, and each has a look of hope and peace on their faces.
Suddenly, their heads all bow in unison as a voice softly floats into the air, and from the center of the gathering walks a dwarf, her garb that of a druid. She raises her hands as she sings, and instruments slowly join her from seemingly nowhere. The people hum softly, giving her words an almost physical form. The clouds above even still for her voice. If one were to look to the farthest reaches of the crowd, one could see several women, dancing together in very specific, yet fluid movements, like in a trance. Scimitars are wielded by each, and their display depicts story, so old that few can remember it, and you are not even sure what the story is about. But it captivates you a moment, making you feel at ease and in peace.
As the song finishes, she nods to the leaving heroes and clasps her hands together in prayer.

“Althalous takes care of those who take care of her. Remember that, and you will be forever remembered by the trees and wind...”

With that you embark.

The road is winding, and the sun shining down gives ample light to see quite a distance. This road leading to the Forest is not as weathered as the more trafficked roads, but there are signs of recent use. The birds sing softly and the air is crisp. It will take three days to reach the edge of the Forest, and a few hours to walk to the Outpost within it.

Challrain, who does not own a mount, will walk along the path, near the edge, chatting
with each the Kobold, Orc and Elf in turn, asking each questions about the city, coins
and the tribe.

Hes not to sure whats going on but hes happy to be heading a way away the way he
came from.

Are there Inns along the way? Challrain who did not spend the night in the city
on the night before, since Soolee would not let him spend the night in her bed,
and it was to noisy and smelly. He and Challrain spent the night a ways out
fron the city.

If we make it to the 2nd night, "Should we not hunt for meat and other things?"

Coming down from my cave with all my supplies, I head to the gathering happening in the middle of the town. While standing there with the others, a female dwarf emerges from the crowd singing. She looks to be dressed as I am, so I gather she is a druid. Why have I not seen her before.... After the prayer we four begin to head off to the West.

Walking along the path with Sax and the others I begin to ask questions about eachothers skills, both strengths and weaknesses. I want to know what kind of fighting capabilities they have and magic of any sort they may have. I want to see how I can use their talents for the best results.

Answering Challrain I say, "It would be a great idea if we were to forage for ourselves along the way. No knowing what we will find once we get to where we are going. Remember this is an information gathering mission" and said with a sneer, "and a head hunting mission."

I answer all his other questions about the city, coins and the 'tribe'. Trying to get myself with him at a distance I can not be heard to well I try and lead him in a different minded direction about the 'not so kind' tribe. "Challrain, you know why they are having us do all the work here right? It is cause they are cowards and unable to fend for themselves. They find others to do their work for them, knowing that it is a mission that is fruitless. They see us as threats and want to be rid of us, they are an evil lot. They guise themselves in cheer and prayers. But we, (I point to Loktar) know the truth of it all. I have yet to talk to Lucian about any of this as of yet, but I will I promise you this." We continue to talk throughout the morning heading toward the West.....

Lucian leaves the Sun's Down Inn just before dawn and greets the sun as is his moring ritual. He goes to the temple of his creator to pray and leaves behind a gold piece. He goes to market and buys Two days worth of trail rations and some hempen rope. He meets at his group at the gathering and watches the ceremony. "Farwell and good with your journey to the south.", he says to the other group. "Alright I think we be heading out now." Three days until we reach the outpost and then we will see what is going on there.

"So these 'coins' are in exchange for favors or items, they do not share of have jobs to
support the tribe, eerr... city. Like my Torc, it is worth someone to hunt meat for me.
They give us metal to do work for them, and other people will take this metal for
things, like a bigger torc. My Tribe is full of all races, we take in new people, and
you must work there or you do not survive. We will hunt together and feed the big
one and let talk big thoughts. OK Xen?" Challrain

Loktar walks steadily, looking along the path as if thinking about what is to come. He answers Challrain's questions, mentioning that he is not from Dennish, but the orcish lands to the south. Sometime during the day, as Challrain and Xen are talking, he moves closer to Lucian. "I understand you kill orcs... I can assure you I have no special love for elves, either. We've been placed together, though, perhaps through someone's misguided sense of humor. I trust we have nothing to worry about from the other?"

"I assure you you Loktar you have nothing to worry from me. For I would only turn my blades on you only if you were to comit an act of treachary that would harm this group or any of those that will come under our protection. For now we are on a course that has partnered us together and as such I will fight with you as bravely and valiant as I would if you were one of my elven bretheran, that is my promise to you. Now let us focus on the journey ahead." Lucian says in response to Loktars question.

Loktar nods, satisfied, and resumes his position on the other side of Challrain and Xen. Perhaps not my first choice, but I'll take a capable fighter any day. Now to get to the bottom of the events at the outpost.

"Have a good conversation Loktar?" I say. "I have been having a intriguing conversation with Challrain here. He is more like minded than I thought... perhaps we should get some food for dinner I am getting famished. Want to find something with me?" I ask Loktar. I say to Challrain and Lucian, "Perhaps you and Challrain here can find a bite also. What say you Lucian?"

CountFalchiezVander

As you all decide upon hunting about for food, you notice the sun begins to set, and the wind picks up a chill of night within it. To the left of the road is a small clearing, big enough for your and your horses to make camp this evening. Do you make camp, or continue on?

"Sounds good Lucian, Loktar and I will set up a perimeter for camp."

I go into the wooded area to find some materials to construct traps around the area...

:ooc: craft traps (1d20+6=23) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=1420094)

As I am constructing the traps, I begin talking to Loktar...."Why exactly are you out on this mission?? I will give you a little information about me if you would like" Using some of my rope I attempt to construct a trap while waiting for a response.

colonialbob
12th December 2007, 12:08 AM
Loktar crouches, scanning the forest as Xen makes his trap. "The usual adventure business; gold, boredom, that sort of thing. Meeting interesting characters, that's a bonus." It sounds like a joke, but he doesn't crack a smile or even stop looking around the forest. "Well, also I needed to get away from things for a while. This seemed a nice change of pace. You?" He seems more articulate than most orcs as well; perhaps this was part of the getting away he speaks of?

shawnrc
12th December 2007, 01:31 AM
"Me," I say with a shrug, concentrating on the last pieces to my third trap. "I am not sure why I am out here, I was just going into town cause I heard something strange coming from the gates and I wanted to check it out. I have been watching the city for some time now."

Should I tell him the reasons for watching the city? I am not sure if I can trust this one as of yet I better not... "So have you met any interesting characters?" I think to myself Challrain is interesting enough... "What kinds of things are you getting away from? If you don't mind me asking... I am away from things too I should say. I killed the leader of our clan and thought it wise not to stick around." feeding him some information but enough to draw his own conclusions if he wanted too.

colonialbob
12th December 2007, 02:00 AM
Loktar shrugs in turn. "Nothing like that, just tired of my surroundings. The orcs of my home are divided, always squabbling. They care too much about getting their portion of the loot that they waste so much effort stealing from each other." For the first time, he looks at his new traveling companion. "You killed your chieftan? I can't say I'm surprised... I am an orc after all. But I do wonder why?"

Regnier_Leinhart

"Ok Xen I'll see what I can find." Lucian says and goes off into the woods. Walking as quietly as possible Lucian hunts for tonights meal. He scans the forest for any signs of quarry.

Lucian:

You see at first, nothing in small wooded area. Then you hear a small snap of twigs and a few rabbits run towards you. You take them down with ease, getting enough meat to make a suitable stew. Other than that, you see nothing else of note.

Loktar and Xen:

you finish traps and double check them for security flaws, finding none, you make your way back to base camp.

As you all sit down to a hot meal, you hear an alarming whooping noise and several goblins fly out from the forest, setting off the traps that were set by the druid. From their formation, it was if they expected you, but did not think to disarm the traps, which do nothing more then hinder them enough for you to draw your weapons.

He walks over to the goblins and checks them for anything of value before lifting their bodies and moving them a ways into the forest.

Well done Loktar.... We will need that brawn in the future. Looking impressed at the slaughter of the goblins I say, "Great job everyone, we should do some lookout and see if there are any more around. Then we can get back to eating and possibly get some sleep for the night." I watch Loktar close as he subtly checks the bodies of the goblins as he moves them off into the forest a ways. When he gets back I tell him with a wink, "I hope that sated some of your 'boredom' my friend." As I offer him a bowl of stew.

Challrain will continue looking around for where the Goblins
came from, and if there is a scout or other Goblins anywhere.

After 15 minutes he will come back, with his information.

At minimum where the goblins came from so Lucian can
track them from there.

Lucien:

You're highly tuned senses tell you nothing more is near by, which is confirmed by Challrain when he returns.

Loktar:

You carefully remove the bodies, and while you examine them you discover that the leading one carried a small pouch which contained 10 pieces of gold and a strange green vial.

Challrain:

You search out for the 15 minutes, and notice that the goblins were sort of stationed several meters away from the campsite. There are some ragged blankets and some hard rations, the evidence of a small fire pit as well. There is no sign that they traveled from anywhere, but it is almost as if they have been dropped here for a specific purpose.

The morning sun rises up after an uneventful, chilly night. OOC: Those with injuries heal 1 hit point

The camp looks as it should, and the road ahead looks less traveled and more overgrown, as one could tell simply by looking about thirty feet ahead. It seems as if the construction was suddenly stopped and only a basic wagon trail was placed in lou of cobblestones.

As the morning sun rises I squint and rub my eyes getting them used to the brightness. Extending my wings out with a huge stretch I smell something cooking over the campfire. I look over to see Challrain cooking what looks to be some sort of rodent. I look over to Sax and get a little frown on my face. After eating a decent meal and feeding Sax I gather my things and look out to the west along the trail we have been riding. It seems to be overgrown quite a bit and there is no longer any cobblestone to ride along. "Perhaps we should travel more tactically now everyone! Might I suggest Lucian out front and the Loktar followed by me and then Challrain." I say with a confident toothy grin.

The move is theirs now so let's see what they will do. So you should get a good nights sleep." With that Lucian contnues his vigil. Through out the night Lucian watches over the camp and is ready to sound the alarm if the need arises. However no such need arose. In the moring before the sunrises Lucian wakes Challrain as he requested. Then Lucian greets the sun as he always does every morning whenever he can. "Well let's hope that we will not have anymore trouble until we reach the Western Forest." As they walk down the road Lucian keeps his eyes and hears peeled for any dangers that may jump out and attack.

Challrain's expedition hunting proved rather fruitful, harvesting two rabbits for some quick meat, and some fowl for later in the day. The trail is a little more difficult than the worn road, yet you all manage to keep at a steady pace. The day passes without incident, and another rest spot is found. This one looks like it may have had use recently, or within the last week.

Lucian:

About the time the sun reaches its zenith, you notice that there are no animals around, no birds, small rabbits, even larger animal evidence is non existent. You hear silence, with the wind occasionally rustling a few leaves.

Xen:

Your vision and ears seem to play a trick on you, as you notice nothing unusual other than the fact the wild life is gone. The water, you notice from a distance, is clear and flowing at a fairly rapid rate, the sound soothing. The woods also seem to thicken a little more, providing a little more overhead shelter, but obscures your hearing as the wind rushes through it in small bursts from time to time.

It seems that there is a small clearing, naturally formed, just a minute or two off the road side. It would make a decent place to camp, and affords cover from the road and the east.

Lucian:

You take a moment and note the sun's direction overhead, and the wind rustling the trees, their slant due to the sloping ground, and reason that heading slightly southwest will put you ahead on the trail towards the outpost.

After about 2 hours (given the goblin needs assistance with the busted leg) you arrive at the front of the outpost. There is no sound from inside, and the front palisade has been ripped down, the interior iron door hanging from its hinges.

I say to the group as a reminder of what our mission is here.....

You four will be heading to the Western Forest, to find out what happened to the ranger's outpost, and to discover what is behind the goblin incursions. Your reward when you return with the information will be 2700 gold pieces apiece, and there will be a hefty bonus should you bring me the root of the incursions. And by root, I mean head....[/b]

"I think you are right Loktar, perhaps before you poke your head in anywhere, Lucian can scout out the perimeter for any sign of what has happened here. What say you Lucian?" I look around and down at Sax to see what his thought of the situation is.

:ooc: Does he appear to be aware of anything in the area perhaps?

"I think finding out what happened to the outpost will be easy, we just need to find out why and what is behind it all. Maybe we can capture something that will give us information or just get lucky."

Loktar:

You peek inside, and see a large waiting room. There is a large table in the center, with a small, shattered statue, of what you are unsure. There is fungus everywhere in the room, and a pool has formed in a recess in the floor by a door to the west. One of the chairs has been smashed and a cleaver is embedded in its rotting, once royal blue cushion. There is also a smell, a smell none of you are familiar with.

Lucian:

You burst the door down with a resounding kicking, bellowing your rage at whatever is in this room. What you see is something that would make your brow furrow. An ogre, wearing nothing more than a smith's smock and hammer is bent over a table, stuffing a dead creature. While you can't see its face, it has the length of one of your brethren. It spins as you knock the door down, holding the hammer in a threatening position.

"You come Grawl's new home, Grawl make you decoration for bedroom..."

When you turn left, you see a wooden door ahead of you about thirty feet, it is open, but still intact.

OOC: I am actually confused by what you said.... before we got to the T there was a way to goto the right? Or it was an illusion that made it look as though there was a way to the right?

DM Note: As I worded it, you can walk twenty feet down the hall, then either go straight ahead or turn right. If you continue down the hall, you get to the T intersection, if you turn right, you come to a door. My apologies for any confusion.

Well in that case I stop and head right at the first turn.

OOC: Do you all want to alter direction and take the first right, that is no problem.

:ooc: Yeah I think that will be the best idea seeing as the first leads straight to a door. :ooc:

OOC: Sounds good

IC: As they approach the door, Loktar softly taps Xen on the shoulder. "Careful, we don't know what else this place holds..."

You walk to the door, which appears to be in rather good condition, much better than most of the other doors and walls you have encountered. As you near the door, Lucian, Xen and Challrain can all hear whispered voices speaking in a crude common tongue.

Moving close to the door I wave the others back a bit to have to stop. I listen closely trying to hear what is being said inside. Listen (1d20+7=27) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1495221/)
