I have just started on my backlog of D&D books to read - WoL being one of them. I wondered if there are any other DMs who would introduce Legacy items into their games and if so, why?

I don't have the book you mention but the
neatest weapon I made recently is a
spear with the blade made out of a
unicorn horn. I'll let you think of the
abilities.

WOL I assume are huge godly weapons or
like the mace of St Cuthbert and such?

legacy items appear to be normal magical items but you forfill a certain ritual and suddenly BAM!!!!! they have other magical abilities which cab become artefact strength over the course of many levels. They bond with you and thus increase in astrength over the course of levels and completeion of other item specific rituals... such as eat a gnoll whilst holidaying on the plane of shadow whilst wearing the striped underpantsof cannabilistic power.. hmm but normally a bit more serious in nature.

unicorn spear sounds cool - I woul have it give the wielder teleport 1/day but if thrown it can teleport through any boundery negating any concealment + it being a holy weapon.

I used it as a cult weapon for a Bear cult. A bear had to kill a unicorn in
fair combat and the horn has to be harvested a certain way.

Bonus to hit, High save for poison, hurts poison monsters more
than normal creatures, the teleport they have not found and I really like
the idea of going thru boundaries. Because of the harvesting its not a
holy weapon.

Thanks for the info on WOL.

I like the Legacy Items concept, an items that grows with the character, a whole lot. But I am not sold on the WoL execution of said idea.

Ah, Unicorn Horn, I have a character with a halberd that uses a unicorn's horn for the central spike. The horn was acquired from an ancient museum, so we had no idea if it has been taken from a killed uni or one that had died. Anyway, the unicorn horn horn spike was removable and usable as a (stabbing) dagger. Such a cool weapon.

How would you improve the execution of legacy items - I know they have really made the idea a usuable alternative but the thing I didnt like was the inherent minuseus to skills and whatnot which seemed rather hermoginised. I do think powerful items should have some negative affect (just like the One Ring or Stormbringer) but I think it should me a more pervasive route than just minuses to a character sheet.

<_< Perhaps it could come with smallville like drawbacks, get kryptonian powers, get their weaknesses too.

Perhaps the Unicorn spear grows to give you unicorn powers, but also has the side effects like making you subject to unicorn bane weapons.Any enchantment like a +1 sword of unicorn slaying would do its bane damage to you as well.Summon monster, can it summon a unicorn?if so, it may call you instead! Maybe you become notorious amoung the forest folk, hey she's a unicorn butcher, get her! Worse what if it came with something Pinnochio, every time it "lvls" you gain a new trait of the unicorn, ears, tail, ect.

-_- I know this wouldn't be applicable [yes Bandito I used the word applicable.surprised you guys didn't I!] to non-monster related items. The other stuff could have other non-stat altering stuff that just messes with the character in an rpg way.Like cursed with bad luck, for example. If a randomn roll is called for to see who the baron's daughter falls for and provokes the barons never ending wrath..it's you.Roll to see who the monster randomnly attacks,I think not..that's right it is YOU!Chance someone gets pick pocketed,or contracts a disease [still get a save]...oh yeah,it's you!The boys decide to hold a lottery to make newbie stew, that's right...you're going to be the lucky winner!

Maybe the bond ties the item to you in such a way that it forms a familiar like bond.Sure you get all this kick a%# power, but you also suffer if it falls into the wrong hands [like Lithuse hands].Some spell-slinger who knows how to use its bond to hurt you could have it thieved and force you to retrieve it from his death-trap,or hold it ransome to make you do his little quest before returning it.Maybe the bonds strong enough they can hurt you through it [like when a familair dies...].

I'd ask SUNFISTO :wizard: I'm pretty sure his Burning Fists are Legacy weapons.

A friend of mine who does the most DMing of the group is using the rules for creating Legacy items with us as players, which is just down right cool.I mean my build will have when it is finished a legacy item, a flute to be exact. Another is working on a giant slaying Kukri, etc.. The ones presented in the book make great adventure hooks, and I will be basing an entire campaign around the Legendary weapons of the Gods listed (Gruumsh, CL, Garl, all the racial Deities). Other than an adventure hook, I can't see giving them to Pc's at all, but it is a great idea to have the creation rules in case your players do something so cool with the weapon or item that it can become a legacy.

GUYS HELP ME PLEASE :) rigght heres the deal, my current character in my D&D party is Krallithar Darkmoon, a half-orc Barbarian.

well he has his fathers greataxe, aptly named "Beater", and it would make a good legacy weapon methinks.

Its currently an Ironwood +2 Greataxe with a bane against magical beasts

but id love for some innate power to come to surface, and for this to become a nice legacy weapon that could eventually become an artifact, though i am completely stumped for creating a personal and balanced legacy weapon.

Please id love for some brainstorming cause i could use your great minds (and barroks twisted one) to get something good rolling :]]

Tell us the legends associated with the great axe. Was it used in great battles? Did it kill the Great Dark Ape of Muwumbi in one blow? What were the goals of its previous owners? And maybe we should move this into its own thread to attract more interest?

Dont worry Lapiz, i didnt fell the great ape :)

Well I'll start from the beginning, without posting you the entire story, it was my father's Axe who was also the well respected and leader of the Lark Taruk clan. It was his dying wish in the midst of a vicious attack on our camp and home, for me to escape but take his axe, and to never stop fighting for what you beleive in. I was then dragged away by his men and taken and raised with some of the survivors. Although my clan had always wanted me to become a shaman, I had other ideas, i wanted to fight the biggest foes and prove to myself and my father that i am the greatest warrior that has ever lived.

Skipping the center story, i am now a level 6 barbarian, and very capable. I want the world to remember the name, Krallithar Darkmoon, so i am favourable to bards. Great things i have felled so far in my conquests : (I need to check the names so i will change the post when i remember)

A Bugbear marauder, the leader of a vicious group of bandits. I was the sole survivor of the adventure, leaving me with a humoungous hoard. And a magic sponge :)

A large Ogre lord, lead some ogres as guardians of a fortress in which a black dragon ruled all in the depths.

A huge black dragon, after shrugging off the acid burns from its breath, i leapt forward and struck it square in the neck (critical with max power attack)

those are the most powerful foes i have felled, but goblins have come to scream "Beater! Beater!!" as my axe is somewhat of a nightmare to them.

I done a large necklace with the Teeth of my foes on it, and i have a Dragon jaw pauldron :)
mainly for dramatic effect hehe

I also got 2 tattoos after an epic low level battle in the field of battle between two minor deities.

Sun Rays: On the backs of your hands are tattooed the long rays of the golden sun. Just like you can count on the sun rising daily, people can count on you, as this tattoo signifies.

Bear: Across your chest is tattooed a mighty bear, whose inexhaustible strength is your strength, and whose capacity to keep fighting even when sorely wounded is a quality you also possess.

(yes i know these are nabbed from PHBII, but they're very significant to me)

ok i know iv babbled a bit but its just so you can get an idea of what iv been up to.
making my axe a legacy would be perfect for making the world remember my name

Let us move discussion of Beater to HERE (http://barroks-tower.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=12557).

And leave this thread for continued discussion of WoL.
