((I couldn't take as much time as I wanted to on this project, but here is my race.))
Race Name: V'rik Enu
Life Span: 100-150 human years
Planet: Tyren
Languages: Common, Tyu (their own language)
Height: 6 ft to 8 ft tall
Weight: 120-240 lbs
Religion: Synca Lea
Looks: V'rik Enu are tall, slender creatures with long legs, big hands with seven fingers on their dominant hand and six fingers on their non-dominant hand. Their dominant hand has two opposable thumbs on either side of their hand. Both hands have black claws and translucent spines that raise when they are irritated, angry, or scared--not a voluntary action. They have big shoulder blades with translucent spines over them, protecting them. They have blue, gray, or green skin and translucent eyes which make a bad idea for them to go into sunlight, for it can blind them in thirty seconds. Their 'hair' is either a violet or reddish translucent color. They are really all thin individual spikes that when the V'rik Enu are scared or threatened stand on end. They have slits where normal noses would usually be that work sort of like gills that they can close. They also have gills that are closeable on their wrists. Their feet are small and well-balanced. They have scales on the bottoms of their feet, and claws on their four toes and one on their heel for grip. They look strange because they have long, thick eyelashes, but no eyebrows. Their "hair" generally grows down to the backs of their knees at most. It does hurt them if these spines are hurt. Their muscle structure is different than ours... it is obvious they were walking on two legs long before us.
Environment: The V'rik Enu live in caves beneath the surface of their almost inhospitable world. Their world is too close to the sun in their solar system, so very few things live on the surface. The surface beneath is warm and often moist from water caverns that exist within them. The V'rik Enu exist around these pools of water, swimming, harvesting a kind of edible mold from the walls of the pools, and collecting different sorts of life that also co-exist with the mold. V'rik Enu can naturally breathe under the water, though they cannot exist there for more than a day at a time as the enzymes in the water wear out their skin quickly. Their diet is rather monotonous without outside trade, though still very healthy. This trade is perhaps the only reason they encourage outside trading. The V'rik Enu births only produce a creature vaguely like a fetus in a soft sac which they have dubbed in the common tongue an "egg". These eggs mature in the water for a few more months before the baby emerges and is returned to a mother (the whole colony is its mother since no one knows or cares whose egg the baby came from, though the baby will prefer only one mother to nurse it).
Society/Culture: The V'rik Enu value the young, for it is said they were brought forth from the water to teach the community. For this reason they value inventions and new ideas, however dangerous. Who minds a few disappearing back within the depths of the water if it was a sacrifice for something brought out from within the depths. Children are remarkably different in V'rik Enu society, though no researchers have gotten close enough to figure it out. Some describe it as the children's "magic". Children nor adults adorn themselves with necklaces or jewelry, they see such things as nonsense because that is how the children see it. The surprising thing is the children have remarkable values in responsibility almost as soon as they can talk. V’rik Enu children walk long before they talk, so maybe they can interpret things in that time. Also the V’rik Enu did not use very many tools beyond their hands until humans came and showed them how. The V’rik Enu only wear clothing off their planet or when humans are around out of respect. It is a pain for them to have clothing because of spikes all around. There is prestige even beyond being a child (over twenty you are an adult), the storytellers have great prestige. The V’rik Enu have only started writing in the last hundreds of years, they still need to get all the old histories and myths down in writing. Another group with great prestige are the equivalents of ancient time druids. They are the religious leaders who meditate for answers and to see what may happen in the future. Surprisingly (to humans, at least) they are more accurate than human “psychics” and “fortune-tellers”. The V’rik Enu are protective over their culture and do not like humans who seem to be prying into it. They aren’t a friendly people when they are upset. The society is still very powerfully run by religion. Their religion is monotheistic and revolves around the water... their life source where they go for protection. They have no seasons below surface, they only keep track of human months for trade benefits. It has never been heard of for a V’rik Enu to drop their religion. For all anyone knows the punishment could be death. Some V’rik Enu have tried to teach humans their language for a laugh, but no human has ever accomplished learning their language very successfully. Their language is now changing due to machines, technology, and tools. Before their language had many hand signals, now the language has dropped many of the hand signals. There are still clicks, hisses, gestures, and silences that confuse humans as they are trying to learn the language. There are also the hard sounds that are almost teasingly similar to the human languages. However humans can write their language, since that was only recently invented and has not gained as many complexities as their speech had over the millions of isolated years. It mainly consists of runes, and many Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, and Hindu symbols have been worked into the language. Some are directly taken from ancient Sandskrit.
Religion: They worship the water, the "water child" is the main deity. There are several main holidays pertaining to Uiale, the child, including something called the "vision the other world", the "flight", and the "emerging". The V'rik Enu are very secretive about their religion, but it is apparent they identify most with Hinduism where there are different levels of existance--though they do not believe their bodies change much, they believe they pass on to a new planet. If a child dies it is because "they were too perfect for this world". Burial communities are short and consist of throwing the body into the underground river, and though they have adapted to throwing flowers after the body they will not let outsiders view the ceremonies in most circumstances. They will not adapt to stop water pollution... their society is tender there... if once there is a disease spread by water the colony will die, and perhaps the other colonies too. Their religion is more important to them than a fear of epidemic.
