The Bone Ring of Despair:
Long has the tale of the one known as the Kinslayer been told round campfires, but gather my friends and hear the truth behind the tale…
The Story of Kultarr is a sad one indeed.
Kultarr was born to a Falxian noble in the land of Cavalcante. His parents were not the most loving of parents. In fact they were quite the contrary. Kultarr was neither a planned nor a wanted child. The child was born far in to the later stages of his parent’s life, and this was believed to be the reason for the deformity of the young man.
The poor child was born with a horrible deformity. His right hand was blackened and in the shape of a claw. His parents were ashamed of the child and wished to have him destroyed. It was the court seer who kept this from happening stating that if the child died then the parents would never receive the fame that they were destined.
The parents being a greedy type did not wish to miss out on anything. So instead they confined the boy to a room in the basement of the keep. He was kept alive, albeit barely by his parents. Never did they come to visit the boy. He lived alone in solitude as even the servants were not allowed to have contact with the boy.
Kultarr grew up in the cell that he had been in for most of his short life. He was never allowed to come above to the light and so he grew up in perpetual darkness. His only friends were the rats and spiders that shared the dank cell with him. He never knew the love of another living person.
By the time that Kultarr was 14 years old his body was lean and sickly. His eyes had lost all luster and he had become blind from living in the constant darkness. He was fed only the most rancid of meat and the vilest foods. His life was a pathetic mockery of a real life due to his parents. He did not even know how to speak, as he had been denied human contact for most of his life.
One day Kultarr was visited in a vision by a man dressed in shadows and darkness. His face was like a shadow in the land of darkness where Kultarr was destined to spend his life. He came to Kultarr and whispered the words of knowledge in his ears. It was then that Kultarr began to understand.
The Dark man came to Kultarr every night and spoke to him of the power and deeds that Kultarr would do in his name. He spoke to the boy and for the first time in his life the boy felt something that wasn’t hate or indifference. Kultarr felt hope.
As the years passed Kultarr began to understand more and more of what he was destined to do. He began to grow stronger and stronger with each passing day. The darkness of the cell was actually beginning to feed the young man, as the sun feeds a plant.
The time came one evening for Kultarr to enact his destiny. He woke from a trance that he had been in and seen the Dark Man. The man finally graced Kultarr with his name. The man in the darkness was Adius, God of Darkness; and Kultarr was his chosen.
Kultarr walked towards the door of the cell and touched it. Before his very eyes the cell door rusted away to nothing. Kultarr could feel the power of his patron flow through him. He walked up the steps towards the upper halls of the keep. Those who were unfortunate to cross his paths were slain by bolts of darkness from his sightless white eyes.
He made his way through the house of his parents. Every creature that crossed his path was slain soundlessly. He was guided through the house by a voice only he could hear and understand; the voice of Adius.
He made his way in to the chamber of his parents. He uttered to them his first words. They awoke with a start when they heard the chill voice of their son. The word that he uttered cut them to the very core of their black souls. He only said, “Reckoning”.
His parents died that night of pure fright. Kultarr made his way through the town of Bardin, slaying every Falxian citizen that he could find. He killed in one night over seven hundred souls by himself, with the guidance of Adius. When the job was complete, Adius looked at his chosen and promised to embrace him forever in the darkness.
As soon as the words were uttered Kultarr fell to his knees and the morning sun struck the young man for the first time in over 20 years. The light burned more than the flames of hell. Kultarr looked to Adius before his shadowy form vanished forever. The last thing that Kultarr saw before he dissipated was the form of Adius transforming in to the form of the Court seer. The last thing that he heard was the seer shouting:
“Alert the King. The citizens of Cavalcante have revolted and killed the people of Falx!”
When all was said and done the only thing left was a ring made of bleached white bone in the place where Kultarr once knelt.
And so the land of Cavalcante was pushed in to war with the Empire of Falx.

The Bone ring of Despair is a small ring made entirely of bleached white bone. It has small flecks of blackened material throughout its circumference. The ring is extraordinarily dense and cold to the touch. If magic is detected for it will radiate a strong aura of magic as well as an extremely strong aura of evil.
The ring has many powers. Some are useable at will, while others are useable a limited number of times per day. All spell effects of the ring are cast at 30th level of ability.
Always Active:
Death Ward
At Will:
Protection from Good
Desecrate
Spell Resistance
Darkness
Darkvision
Usable three times per day:
Cause Fear
Slay Living
Dispel Good
Useable once per day:
Power Word Kill
The ring contains a small part of the essence of Kultarr. It still to this day seeks to slay all Falxian citizens that it encounters. When wearing the ring the wearer must roll a Will save (DC30) or kill any Falxian citizen in the area. If the wearer is Falxian, the first time they try and utilize the powers of the ring, they will be struck dead and affected by a “Soul Bind” spell, no save applicable.
