The Nightmarish Shield of Celan:
This shield is made of a peculiar red metal. It has the image of a black storm burst emblazoned on the front. It is a medium kite shield. It weighs double what it should and cannot be wielded by anyone effectively that has a strength of less than 13. If someone of inferior strength should try to use it, they will find that both their attacks as well as their reaction speed are adversely affected (-2 to melee attacks and Initiative).
The shield functions as a heavy steel shield +2. It has several other powers that can be used as well.
It can cast Bulls Strength once per day on its wielder
It makes its wielder immune to fear and fear like effects.
It can summon a Nightmare to fight for the wielder once per month.
It does however have one particularly nasty side effect. Any night that the shield is in possession, all those within 30’ of it have a base 25% chance of experiencing a “Nightmare” as the spell cast at 13th level of ability.
Celan was a Falxian knight of great fame; he was a just knight and a pinnacle of his order. He was one of the first to lead a raiding party to squash the rebellion of Cavalcante in the beginning of the war.
After several days fighting the war and suppressing the people of Cavalcante in the name of Justice, he was visited by the messenger of Larun, God of Light. The messenger told him that the war was an unjust one and that the king was being controlled by some evil power.
Celan knew in his heart that the messenger was right, but he convinced himself that the messenger was part of a plot by the Cavalcante resistance. He slew the messenger in cold blood and never let anyone else know of what he had seen.
Larun turned his back on the knight and cursed him for his stubbornness and wickedness. He cursed the man that he should fail in his every undertaking, and that he would forever dream of when he killed the messenger of the god of light.
Celan turned his back on the knighthood and instead became a mercenary. He fought the war still, but for money now instead of honor. During one failed campaign he killed a leader of the resistance and gained his shield as a trophy.
It wasn’t too much longer that he was killed by his own men as a sacrifice to Thazok in order to bring the unit more luck on the battlefield. Thazok accepted the sacrifice, and condemned the fallen knight’s soul to forever reside in the shield.
