Snow Bind

Transmutation

Level: Drd 3, Sor/Wiz 4

Components: V, S, M

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)

Target or Effects or Area: 5’ radius per 2 caster levels

Duration: 1 round per 2/ caster level

Saving Throw: Reflex (Negates)

Spell Resistance: Yes

By means of this spell the caster is able to change the composition of the snow and ice surrounding the subject to that of a tar like substance. The snow changes in its physical qualities. It becomes more like a super cooled slush, rather than normal snow. Any creature caught in the area must make a Reflex save or have their movement rate reduced to 5’ per round. The spell will also cause a slight amount of damage to the creatures caught within its grasp. For every round within the snow bind area the creatures will take 1d3 cold damage. At the completion of the spell duration, the snow regains its normal properties.

Material component: A small prism, and a bit of pitch

I edited the post to reflect the damage type (Cold). I appreciate the questions, because they help me improve my skills in resource creation. :D

To be honest, this isnt really the type of spell that Rangers get given, they are usually more directly to do with animals and plants, not the weather. I am not entirely sure about the Sor/Wiz level for this spell either, it strikes me as a little weak for a Level 4 spell, but I would wait for some confirmation of that from someone who is better versed than me with level balancing.

The ranger section has been removed.

The reasoning behind the level being 4 is because the spell is essentially a slow spell with damage. Slow is level 3, so making this level 3 would defeat the purpose in taking the slow spell (In winter settings) at all.

I appreciate the help. This is the kind of stuff that I need to make myself better.

Of course, as you say, the simple drawback to this spell is that it would only be taken for winter settings. I see your point about the level though, I was looking for comparisons but was checking holding spells rather than slowing ones.

Thanks for explaining the reasoning though, its always interesting to hear how spells get designed :)
